Vans SK8FIVE2 – Hong Kong’s First Indoor Skatepark

Most of you may be familiar with the public skateparks in Hong Kong. Most are outdoor parks & close at 10:30pm.  After hours, skateboarders have their skate spots. If it rains, its an absolute “no-skate day” unless you go to the few covered skate-spots which may or may not be a bust, depending on the time of day.
A few years ago, we had the Six-Keys miniramp, & for a short time we tasted being able to skate indoors comfortably. So when my good friend Brian told me about the plans for an indoor skatepark in Hong Kong, you can imagine how psyched I was when I heard about his plans.

Last week, I went to visit Brian at the new SK8Five2 facility & was blown away. I had a little chat with Brian about SK8Five2, his insight about this & I’m pleased to share this with you all here.

Me:
I know it has always been a dream to have a proper indoor skate-park, how did you make it happen?

Brian:

You are right brother, growing up skateboarding since 1988, having an indoor skatepark to skate with the homies is always a dream.
Fast forward to 2011, the dream is getting closer and thought to myself, let’s just make it happen, why think. When we have a spot for everyone to meet up and have fun skateboarding, the progress of skateboarding will automatically increase without even knowing. Look back at the World Industries indoor skatepark back in the early 90′s where heads like Keenan (RIP), Gino, Reem, etc. You looked at them and how tricks progress like crazy and look at now, The Berrics, the most successful and influential indoor skatepark in the world. I want to have similar thing here in Hong Kong. We are also lucky to have VANS that is willing to work with us for a year in order to make things happen. I would like to thank VANS for that.

Me:
Tell us a bit more about the ramps & obstacles, they are really well made!  Who designed & built them?

Brian:
As you can see, the size of the park is not big, it’s around 3,000 sq ft, it’s decent.
So, when we looked at the place, we thought of utilizing the best that we can for such a small place. We designed the park so that we can do runs, instead of us just hitting bank to bank back and forth, you can actually do lines in Vans Sk85IVE2 indoor skatepark.
Then, we were so lucky to have California Ramp Works (these people have built all of the amazing skateparks in the US) doing all the technical/measurements layout, they are super super on point, it’s crazy. Mad props to those people. Vans hooked us up with them. It’s the best that can happen to our indoor skatepark.

Me:
Amazing possibilities now for sure!!  What do you have planned for the near future?

Brian:
WOW, 2012 is going to be a crazy one. We are super inspired by theberrics.com and we are going to have fun with the park. We will hold a Game of S K A T E tournament and Game of L E D G E tournament (the same as game of S K A T E but on ledge). We will also have several fun segments that we will post on our website weekly, check them out real soon, you’ll like it. We need to film you as well, you still got a lot of shit in your bags homie, I know it. We are going to have a skateboard lesson as well.

Me:
Anything else to add?

Brian:
Just want to thank VANS for believing in us, to all the local skateboarders that have been supporting 8FIVE2SHOP since day 1, we will always try to give it back. To all the skateboarders around the world for keeping the fire lit. Keep skateboarding and always have fun doing it.

Me:
Thanks Brian!

Skateboarding with Daryll Griggs at Fanling Skatepark

Its been a few years since I skated with Daryll, he was back in Hong Kong for Christmas & we went to Fanling Skatepark for a session.

Daryll Griggs - Frontside grab

Daryll Griggs - Ollie Stalefish grab

We both started skateboarding back in 1986-87 in London, & back then we watched videos of skateboarding in pools & bowls, but all we had to skate were the streets & spots in & around London. Fast forward 25+ years, & we were skating one of the most perfect skate bowls in Hong Kong.

Daryll Griggs - Melon Grab Transfer

Its always been good to shoot skate pics of Daryll, coz he always delivers.

Leica Summicron-C 40mm f2.0 on Lumix GX1

New camera for the new year….
Got the Panasonic Lumix GX1 with the Lumix GX 14-42 power zoom lens – Fantastic camera & lens! But what I’m psyched on is being able to use the Leica 40mm f/2 Summicron-C lens on this camera via a lens adapter.

Leica Summicron-C 40mm f2.0 on Lumix GX1

Can’t wait to try this out not just for photos, but for video too. The 40mm f/2.0 Leica Summicron-C was made for the Leica CL, & its probably one of the best & cheapest lenses Leica made. Its got amazing Bokeh & to use this on a digital camera not only for photos, but for videos as well should be lots of fun.

Will post some sample pics later on my Flickr & Instagram. In the mean time, here are some pics of the lens below.

Slow Motion Skateboarding

More fun with the Casio Exilim TR-100′s HS240 (hi speed 240) video mode.
In this mode, the camera shoots at 240 frames per second, so when you play the video clip back at normal speed of 30 Frames per second, it has this cool slo-mo of what you filmed.
We went out to the skatepark yesterday to play around with this.

By the way, Chun Chai ROCKS!!

Casio Exilim EX TR100, a set on Flickr.

Big ups to Casio Japan for hooking me up with this fun little camera; its got a 21mm wide lens, 1080i HD video & in-camera HDR function.
Check out these snapshots from the last couple of days using mainly the HDR function, for me, I prefer using this at night, the lights really pop out from the pic.

So far, this little camera is a perfect little pocket snapshot camera, its almost like a camera phone, but without the phone!

Here are a couple of reviews & info about this camera.

Stay tuned for more pics & videos soon…

Must have Instagram app

Some friends have mentioned to me how they are amazed at all my hashtags on my instagram pics:

20110928-162918.jpg

Its useful to have hashtags on your pics so they are searchable, similiar to hashtags on Twitter; so for e.g. if you search #skateboards on Instagram, all pics with #skateboards tag will come up.  Quite fun to use hashtags.
See here for more info

Anyway, I don’t type in all these tags one by one, I discovered the tag searching function in one app called Instagallery. Instagallery is an Instagram photo viewing app for iphone & Ipad, its easy to browse, view, like & comment on instagram with this app.

20110928-163827.jpg

When you search for a key word, all the similiar results will automatically come up, & this works also when you add a tag to a photo:

20110928-164000.jpg

When you type in a key word, it returns all the similiar key words & the total picture count, to add this tag simply tap on the key word. Easy.

Another good thing about Instagallery is the ability to ‘favorite’ a photostream, either a user’s photostream or a hashtag photostream…. this is real good if you want to lurk on someone’s photostream, but don’t really want to follow them.

20110928-164341.jpg

The nicest thing about Instagallery is the ability to show all the photos on your photo feed in a grid, which the current instagram app can’t do.

20110928-164455.jpg

You can’t post pictures using this app, you have to use the Instagram app to do that. The app works on your iphone & iPad, in fact, it looks fab on your iPad. Costs Two Bucks.
