Learn Portuguese

Another interview from Brazil, this time from Tribo. If you speak portuguese you’ll be able to read the story of my life, if not then you only find out how old I am and what my favorite baseball team is.

Thanks to Marcelo Mug for the interview

Greetings from Hong Kong

I’m lucky enough to have travelled more than most people I know and everyone always asks me what my favorite place is.

Hong Motherfucking Kong is right on top of the list. HK has everything, culture, food, shopping (tax free camera gear), you can get by fine with english, proximity to mainland China, great public transport, etc. As a New Yorker, HK is especially comfortable because it often feels like I’m in Chinatown in NYC. Sometimes I feel like all I have to do is keep walking and I’ll end up in Little Italy.

But by far the best thing about HK is the 8Five2 crew. From the first time I ever came to HK, Brian and Warren have shown me nothing but love. It was Brian’s birthday a couple of months ago and I wanted to make a little video about a session we had. The thing was nobody landed all their tricks!

So when Nikon Japan approached me about making a video about their new S1100pj point and shoot I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

If you’ve ever been on a skate trip to HK/China with me (and at last count over 100 skaters/filmers/photographers have) then you’ve hung out with Brian, kicked it at 8Five2 and copped some free Knowledge gear then skated Morrison Hill before fake LV shopping in Mong Kok and then ending the night with an amazing dinner.

Morrison Hill is my favorite skatespot in HK and maybe the world. It’s pretty simple, just various mellow bumps, a fun downhill, good ground, a slappy curb, and it’s right next to my favorite sushi spot (you knew that was coming). It’s a perfect warm-up spot before street skating in Hong Kong, I just wish it had a manny pad.

Anyway, this is some homey shit. Just getting out of work, hooking up w/ the crew and skating a fun spot. No 12 stair back lips (not even any ledges!) just flatground and fun.

The Nikon S1100pj has a built in projector that makes it an ill party camera. Not only does everyone get hyped filming with it and watching the footage on the wall, but you can hook it up to your computer and project whatever is on your desktop too. It’s one of those things that make you wonder why no one had thought of it before.

Thanks to Tetsuji from FTC Tokyo for hooking everything up, Warren, Piet, Chris, Danny, Chunchai, Dan Magee for all the advice (this was my first real edit), and a belated happy birthday to Brian Siswojo!

NikonX8FIVE2

Due to the rain and the fact that I don’t know how to edit, the Nikon x 8Five2 video is running dangerously late…

Get High to This

“Biznaguinha” or as most people know him, Rodrigo TX, is one of the best dudes I’ve ever seen step on a skateboard.  He’s also one of the best people I know when he steps off a skateboard.

I used an HVX to film all the HD footage in “Give me my money Chico”. The funnest part was shooting in camera slo-mo. I really liked that camera and even though DSLR’s are so much more versatile I kinda miss it. Though I wonder what the fuck would I do with all the hours of slo-motion footage I would end up filming.

This 60fps edit was supposed to be a bonus feature on the DVD but due to all the weed we smoked during editing of course time ran out.

Fortunately for me, Kyle Camarillo put the bong down just long enough to finish this edit, so now sit back, spark some of that ish, and watch Biznaga in glorious High Definition.

Thanks to Dave Chami for the photo and Alan Hannon for backing me up w the double angles!

Watch it here!

Big in Brasil

Thanks to my homey Flavio Samelo, Vista magazine in Brasil just did an interview w/ me about the making the L-R-G video. It’s in Portuguese so you might not be able to follow it but it basically outlines a successful plan to film a video around eating hot pot in China and acai in Brasil.

Thanks to Brian Uyeda and Joe Brook for the photos!

I pledge allegiance

Most skateboarding photographers fall into one of two categories; Canon or Nikon.

Of course there are many who shoot Hassleblad or Leica but if you shoot sequences or anything digital then you are going to fall into one of those two camps.

Joe Brook has always been a Nikon supporter, if photography was football then he’d be rocking a Nikon jersey everytime he skated. Due to his advice the first serious digital camera I got was a Nikon. I wasn’t really sold though, Canon just seemed to have everything in the right place and make everything a little easier. When it comes to digital Canon just seems to have Nikon beat. I’ve been shooting video and photos on a Canon 7D since the summer and I couldn’t be happier.

But when I was approached by Nikon Japan about possibly doing something for them highlighting some new technology they have, you know I was ready to try Nikon out again.

I’ll let you know how it goes…

Fuck the dude on the left (the guy in the middle is cool tho)

Woke up at 8 a.m. on my last day in Bangkok to The Yankees being 3 down to The Texas Rangers. Quick shower then off to a baseball themed sportsbar on Sukhumvit 23 that was gracious enough to open early for me to watch the game. By the time I got there the Rangers were up 5 to 0 by the bottom of the 4th.

I wasn’t too worried because I knew The Yankees weren’t going to give up that easily. The Yankees in the post season are something else. Despite the fact that CC got lit up in Texas, I was hyped how he hustled on the play to home that got out Cruz. Fortunately for me The Yankees displayed more than enough hustle when Brett Gardner got to 1st before CJ Wilson and started the rally and The Ranger collapse. Watching baseball in Asia at 7am is definately a tough way to start the day but after a game like this today had a great feeling.

And if you are one of the three people who reads this blog and you don’t care or understand baseball then all you need to know is that todays ALCS opener finished;

New York 1-George W Bush 0

Pinstripes or Orange?

There could possibly be a Giants v. Yankees World series for the first time since 1962. I know it’s really premature but I ran into these guys in Korat, Thailand and they were already excited about it.
